Second Position
Plant Stand / Stool
Second Position originated from a domestic ritual my mother’s ongoing effort to keep an orchid alive in our New York City apartment. The care and attention given to the plant prompted the idea for an object that could shift function over time: a plant stand, when no longer needed, that could be repurposed as a stool.
The project explores delicacy through structure, pairing graceful form with durable materials. Early sketch models focused on balance and posture, eventually leading to a form that recalled a ballerina in motion. This reference informed both the stance of the legs and the tabletop, which echoes the shape and volume of a tutu.
The piece is constructed with walnut legs and a steel frame, over which concrete was poured to form the tabletop. Casting the concrete over a plastic membrane produced a smooth, fabric-like surface, softening the material’s inherent weight.
Second Position considers care, adaptability, and the quiet choreography of domestic objects how furniture can hold both living things and human presence, shifting roles as needed.
