Echoes

Terracotta Ceramics Series

While living in Italy, I explored working with terracotta, creating a small collection of objects including ashtrays, fruit bowls, a smoking pipe, a vase, and a paintbrush holder.

The forms were inspired by details observed in High Renaissance paintings and historical artifacts objects whose original purpose was often unknown, but whose shapes suggested potential function to my product design brain. Some pieces were finished using the Japanese glazing technique Raku, while the more colorful works were painted with colored slip, emphasizing form and surface simultaneously. These early experiments with material, technique, and interpretation later informed the development of my final thesis in stoneware.
